Supporting Transradial Intervention through Training

“I am a psychologist by training and worked as a medical device product specialist for 10 years before joining Terumo 11 years ago, working first as a sales representative and then as a clinical specialist. For me, education is a profound calling. It’s about making a tangible impact in healthcare and in the real world – in ways that are relevant to patients’ lives. Through Terumo’s education programs, we have accelerated the shift from femoral to radial access in Mexico, which has enabled same-day discharge, better outcomes, and reduced risks for patients. When we put devices in the hands of these doctors for the first time, we are empowering them to provide improved care and, by extension, improving their patients’ quality of life. We are continually developing enhanced training tools that closely simulate real-life scenarios and innovating training content to stay current with medical advances.”

Advancing Healthcare in Indonesia

“I work in Terumo’s Academic Training Department. We aim, to reduce medical errors and nosocomial infections through education and training on the proper use of medical devices aligned with hospital guidelines and rules. My role is creating training materials for Terumo products for nurses and healthcare professionals across Indonesia to give them knowledge and practical experience on the proper techniques.
Using advanced training techniques such as simulation-based training and Terumo Proactive Action for Safety training in various programs is highly impactful. Feedback from these trainings includes lower incidence of insertion failures and phlebitis, nursing procedures being revised based on the training, and internal trainings being held to teach others the same techniques. We plan on developing more simulations and videos, especially for online and hybrid trainings as well as e-learning that can be accessed on demand to further improve nursing quality in Indonesia.”

Training is a Vital Social Contribution

“I currently work as a senior field clinical specialist at Terumo, training healthcare professionals (HCPs) in cardiac catheterization. Training HCPs is a vital form of social contribution that directly impacts the health and well-being of individuals and communities, improving the quality of healthcare services and potentially saving lives.
Our training programs support the professional development of healthcare practitioners, with wide-ranging beneficial impacts including skill improvement, increased confidence, and enhanced work efficiency that ultimately enhance patient care and safety. Effective training also contributes to the overall sustainability of the healthcare system because well-trained HCPs are better equipped to handle challenges such as pandemics, emergencies, and the changing healthcare needs of patients and communities.
Training healthcare providers represents a commitment to improving healthcare quality and ensuring HCPs are well-prepared to meet evolving needs, thereby increasing the resilience of the healthcare system and contributing to the overall health of society.”

Leveraging Clinical Experience for Effective Training

“I am a clinical perfusionist with over 17 years of experience in cardiovascular surgery services. I have worked as a clinical specialist for the cardiovascular line at Terumo Colombia Andina S.A.S. (TCA) since 2020, developing educational and academic activities for associates within TCA and Terumo Latin America Corporation, as well as hospital clinicians in Colombia and the Andean region. Education and the delivery of clinical and academic tools is fundamental to patients receiving the best therapies and the best technologies in surgical interventions. Our training activities specifically focus on clinical simulations, which allow healthcare professionals (HCPs) to obtain skills and evaluate the impact of Terumo technologies in patient care.
I also understand the needs of HCPs from my own clinical experience. I can put myself in their shoes, which helps me build trusting relationships and resolve their concerns. I focus on providing solutions that allow HCPs to attain the best clinical results in their daily practice.”

Impactful Simulation-Based Training

“I joined Terumo India in April 2022 after extensive experience working as a clinical perfusionist, extracorporeal membrane oxygenation systems and perfusion product specialist, and transcatheter aortic valve implantation therapy manager. I utilize my clinical experience in the simulation-based training we offer. This training fosters practical expertise, improves work efficiency, and equips healthcare professionals to excel in dynamic real-world situations. It greatly affects participants, elevating their skills, instilling confidence, and enhancing their decision-making abilities. Simulation-based training is therefore a commitment to societal progress. It contributes to career development and helps improve patient outcomes which, in turn, benefit society as a whole.
These are some of the many ways simulation-based training is deeply impactful. We have many plans for future simulation-based training, including for regional trainers and healthcare professionals, adding new training tools, and potentially using virtual and augmented reality for training on existing and immersive technologies.”

Commitment to Skills Development

“I view training as a powerful tool to empower colleagues and foster their career development. While the impact may vary from one trainee to another, my general aim is to elevate their skills and knowledge about the products for which I provide instruction. I aspire to give them deeper comprehension of the subject matter, enabling them to perform more effectively and confidently in their roles. This, in turn, will bolster their self-assurance when working in the field and have a meaningful impact on their professional lives.
Training and the methods of delivering it are constantly evolving. Training requires the ability to effectively communicate, engage with, and adapt to the diverse needs of learners. I am committed to investing in the development of my teaching and facilitation skills to excel as a trainer because I want to positively influence people’s professional lives.”

Collaboration with Healthcare Professionals in Trainings

“I have more than 30 years of experience in the medical device industry. I strive to model professionalism while imparting knowledge in trainings to help others achieve success. One physician told me recently that I had helped him save the life of a patient! There is no higher compliment, and it illustrates what training makes possible.
Trainings allow healthcare professionals (HCPs) in different professional roles and with different levels of experience to come together and learn from each other. I had the privilege of learning from pioneers in neuroendovascular surgery, and I value sharing my knowledge and experience with other HCPs. I am confident that these interactions, made possible through the framework of training, lead to the creation of new ideas and solutions. I will continue enhancing participant engagement with this in mind, ensuring our trainings serve to increase knowledge and foster collaboration.”

Sharing the Latest Information and Techniques

“I am a registered respiratory therapist and a certified clinical perfusionist, and have been with Terumo for nine years as a principal clinical specialist. I enjoy learning about the products we offer and various ways to utilize the machines in different cases for the best patient outcomes. We are able to get the latest information on new techniques and help clinicians learn from the research done at Terumo.  Providing onsite training on our machines often leads to ‘light bulb’ moments for clinicians. I also facilitate exchanges among clinicians to share their experiences in different scenarios, which further amplifies what they learn in this training. I am also keenly interested in getting ideas from clinicians to our engineers. Having clinicians consider what they can and cannot do, and offering alternatives that our engineers can deliver to satisfy their needs, ultimately benefits both the clinicians and their patients.”

Leading Interventional Cardiology Congress in the Country

“Trainings allow participants to practice, learn, and network with peers and key opinion leaders (KOLs) to improve their skills and confidence. A great example of this is when Terumo participated in a leading interventional cardiology congress in my country. We set up a training village with several stations providing simulation-based learning for attendees, including entry site management, ST-elevation myocardial infarction, bifurcations, and complex coronary intervention through radial. Our program offered both ad-hoc sessions and scheduled workshops with KOLs. This illustrates the impact of Terumo’s academic initiatives for physicians.
Knowledge is alive when it’s shared, and when you can improve clinical outcomes, it’s so much more meaningful.”

Innovating Training for the Future

Lori Harada
Senior Manager – Commercial Technical Excellence / Terumo BCT, Inc / Colorado, U.S.A.
“I am a registered nurse with 35 years of experience in apheresis, the last 12 at Terumo Blood and Cell Technologies (Terumo BCT). Training has always been a passion of mine. Teaching operators how to run a device for the first time or refreshing the knowledge of experienced operators brings me great satisfaction in knowing that I have helped advance people’s knowledge so they can provide better patient care. I also hope the participants in my training sessions have fun because it means that they are more likely to remember what they are taught. Being able to remember and apply what they have learned results in better patient outcomes.
A robust learning framework with many avenues for accessing educational materials, including in-person, instructor-led classes, hybrid virtual environments, online e-learning modules, and podcasts will be key going forward. We must explore all possibilities to propel us into the future.”

Education Delivers Quality Care

Rocio Rivero Perez
Field Clinical Specialists / Terumo Medical de Mexico S.A. de C.V. / Mexico
“My background is in nursing and obstetrics, with 12 years spent working in a hospital before coming to Terumo two years ago. Education is so fundamental to healthcare. When healthcare professionals acquire and reinforce their knowledge from subject matter experts, they feel a greater sense of security and gain confidence. This has a direct impact on patient care and attention by reducing human error and improving quality and safety standards. Knowledge is prevention.
Education is a means of providing this assurance and empowerment to healthcare professionals every day. This results in better care for patients returning home to their families. We offer products and solutions that enable healthcare professionals to do their jobs better. We will develop even better educational programs based on the needs of hospitals, the latest evidence, and updated knowledge to continue delivering high-impact education.
Terumo’s educational programs enable quality care.”
